While the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) strives to create a reference atlas of the healthy human body at the cellular level, functional tissue units (FTUs) are employed to bridge the macro and micro scales. These sub regions of tissue that serve a specific function lie between the organ and single cell level. The HuBMAP: Hacking the Kidney Kaggle competition tasks competitors with creating machine learning (ML) models that segment glomeruli from whole slide images (WSIs) of healthy human kidney tissue. It is hoped that one of the resulting models will be robust across organs and imaging modalities.
