Systems biology investigates the characteristics and the complex interactions of all elements in a particular biological system. In the context of this work, cellular signal transduction is of particular interest. Receptors located at the cell membrane are stimulated by an external signal and induce an intra-cellular signal. Subsequently, the signal transduction takes place and the signal is transported toward the nucleus. In this work, we study the effect of the external signal reaching the cell in respect of both time and space. Depending on the spatial signal location, the external signal is not present on the complete membrane. Signal properties like location, duration, and signaling function are subject to investigation. We use a stochastic model which was extended to incorporate the external signals. The particle-based model allows examining stochastic simulations. In contrast to approaches with differential equations, the stochastic modeling allows to consider asymmetries in the architecture of the cellular model. The impact of the external signal is evident in the signal concentration for all proposed signal properties and in the dynamic adjustment of the cytoskeleton.http://www.visus.uni-stuttgart.de/en/institute/people/research-associates/martin-falk.html
