Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is globally one of the most important food crops. It is hexaploid, with a genome size estimated to be about 17 Gbp. It is highly repetitive (80%) and its three closely related (sub-) genomes are a result of aseries of hybridizations. Efforts made to develop genomic resources for bread wheat are led by the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC), with the long term goal of obtaining a high quality reference genome sequence. The IWGSC chromosome survey sequences (IWGSC-CSS),which although being a far cry from the assemblies available for model species, constitute an invaluable asset for the researchers in the field. We illustrate some of the ways in which these resources can be used and built upon and demonstrate two of our in-house web applications: CoChing (Wheat Contig Chaining by Synteny toBarley) and the Bread Wheat Promoter Finder. These applications, developed in Java/JSF rely on the PrimeFaces library for providing a user friendly interface, and by utilizing information from related species, such as barley, Brachypodium and rice, they allow us to better exploit the IWGSC-CSS data.
