The digital illustration represents an optically cleared mouse brain illuminated by a laser and showing a typical neuronal pattern in red. Optical clearing is a group of techniques that make an opaque sample transparent. These treatments coupled with imaging of fluorescent labels let us observe gross morphology of tissues made fluorescent via different strategies without having to section thick samples like brains or other organs. This, along with the development of better lightsheet microscopes and the advancements of AI-driven image segmentation can lead us to understand better complex systems in their natural architecture.
