Within the recently founded Netherlands Consortium for Systems Biology the Laboratory of Bioinformatics of the Wageningen University is tasked with the visualization of complex (network) data. Systems biology inherently deals with large volumes of heterogeneous data and visual exploration is an important part of the analysis of such data. Standard visualization tools commonly suffer from the same weakness: increasing detail of part of the picture or network by “zooming in” will at the same time result in loss of context. The solution to the problem is in principle simple: to increase the amount of data that can be displayed, one has to increase the dimensionality or the size of the display. The currently most cost-effective way of increasing the display size is a “tiled display”. In a tiled display a number of standard LCD displays are linked in a grid. We have acquired a tiled display, consisting of 12 monitors in a 4x3 grid powered by 3 SGI computers. We will be working on two related objectives: 1- Implementing software to facilitate visual exploration of complex data such as metabolic networks on the tiled display. Although software for general use is a
