The mitochondrial genome is constituted by a circular chromosome of 16569 base pairs, which is maternally inherited without any recombination. Thus, mutations harbored in ancient sequences are propagated to descendant samples, with the addition of personal variants. These complex patterns of inheritance are usually displayed with phylogenetic trees, where these evolutionary relationships are depicted via succeeding branch divisions. The main reference for the human phylogenetic tree is represented by Phylotree, which is continuously updated to reflect newly published data. However, such tree is based on a single HTML file that contains all the data and is almost impossible to navigate online. In fact, only subtrees can be accessed online, while the complete tree must be downloaded as a zip file. Finally, the situation is made worse by the fact that, since no filtering is possible, all the data of all the haplogroups is always shown. We hereby present PhyloD3 (http://phylod3.herokuapp.com), a new D3.js-based web application that, leveraging PhyloTree data, allows for a seamless navigation of the Human phylogenetic tree, while providing advanced search and filtering features.
