We will generate an enormous amount of dynamic image data that will be used to develop predictive statistical, mathematical, and computational models of cells. These models will help reveal how cells execute their functions and what goes wrong in disease. We do not yet have good approaches to organize and represent large or diverse data sets in a cellular context, and it is not realistic to view and mentally merge the plethora of movies that we will acquire. To observe and report how the inter-relationships among the various molecular assemblies determine function in the cell, we need to present them conjoined. To do this we will develop an “Animated Cell” image database that represents the likely positions of assemblies and activities, integrating all of the information that we are collecting. The multi-scale output of the statistical and mathematical models will also be in the database. An “Animated Cell Explorer” interface will furnish the database with a viewer and analysis toolkit to provide a driving force for the field, informing us about what is known and unknown, and allowing us to visualize and analyze how all of the components interact as cells gohttps://www.alleninstitute.org/our-science/cell-science/animated-cell/
