A take on the Fungal kingdom and the cell wall complexity. There are millions of undescribed fungal species, including macro and micromycetes. All of them display an external array of polysaccharides and proteins, or cell wall, that grants protection. There is vast field of research on fungal cell wall synthesis and assembly, since it plays a major role in growth, morphogenesis, and evolutionary success of Fungi. Because there is a lack of structural data, I used the alpha fold predicted structures of a chitin synthase (CHS1), a mannoprotein (CIS3) and the catalytic subunit of the glucan synthase complex (FKS1). These are some of the most important proteins in cell wall synthesis in yeast, and yet, an understanding of the molecular mechanisms in the process is still a work in progress.
