With the various 'omics technologies the amount of data produced is outstripping the capacity of scientists who generate the data to efficiently analyse it. In most institutes bioinformaticians are in short supply and large scale data generation has various issues that are not fully understood and so analysis cannot be automated. Visualisation and the ability to extract and process data based on filtering the results is invaluable for the process of developing consistent reproducible workflows and understanding the data with all its caveats. Our aim is to develop tools with a high degree of usability to empower biologists to do complex analysis even when bioinformaticians are not available. To this end we use and are developing GBrowse ( http://gmod.org/wiki/Gbrowse ) as a primary display, scientific repository and analysis tool. Previously we have developed Dissect, to produce alternative data displays across multiple loci. Also we have developed glyphs and plugins to help visualize and extract data to aid molecular biology sequence analysis at the bench level.
