Megan Gozzard (Wellcome Sanger Institute)
Gynaecological disorders are common but frequently under-recognised, in part due to gender health inequalities and limited public awareness. To address this, a team from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and EMBL-EBI is developing a visual booklet designed to improve menstrual health literacy by providing accessible, engaging educational resources. Here, I present four illustrated pages from the upcoming booklet, which will be made publicly available following final review. These pages cover: (1) the hormonal dynamics of the menstrual cycle; and three hormonal disorders—(2) premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), (3) polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and (4) functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea (FHA). Each page integrates data visualisation (generated using ggplot2) with hand-drawn and vector illustrations (created using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Fresco), blending scientific content with design to enhance clarity and accessibility. This work demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary approaches in communicating complex biological concepts and contributes to broader efforts to destigmatise and demystify menstrual and hormonal health.
