Over the past few years, multiple high-throughput plant phenotyping platforms have been installed in our department. They consist of imaging robots for both the model plant Arabidopsis and crops like maize, in growth chambers as well as in the greenhouse. Several of these robots also provide automated weighing and watering of plants. Overall, plant phenotyping platforms generate massive amounts of data that cannot be efficiently managed on a local hard drive. To solve this problem we have developed a web application, called PIPPA, for the management and the analysis of phenotypic data and associated metadata. PIPPA, the PSB Interface for Plant Phenotype Analysis, communicates with the platforms in two ways: information is retrieved from the different platforms and stored in a dedicated database, and platform-specific experiments are set up and linked with the required metadata. The ultimate goal of the interface is to allow scientists with no background knowledge on image analysis and large-scale data management to setup and analyze their own plant phenotyping experiments.
