Almost any data can be represented in a matrix form. Matrices and their resulting heatmaps are widely used in bio-sciences, for example to represent expression data. Many features that are measured can have various attributes (dimensions), which makes it difficult to represent in one heatmap. In Gitools it is possible to visualize multi-dimensional matrices. We propose Gitools as an adequate tool for facilitating the visualization and analysis of multi-dimensional data interactively. Data from cancer genomics projects is a good example of data that can be effectively explored in Gitools. A typical study nowadays screens the cancer genome of a cohort of patients for a multitude of alterations: Copy Number Alteration, Mutations, Expression and others. These alterations are represented in different data formats and it remains a challenge to integrate them in a unique view. The multi-value matrix allows working with various dimensions at once. Moreover, the interactivity of the heatmaps in Gitools helps exploring big multi-dimensional data sets effectively and the thoroughly customizable visualization options help to display each data type in the most convenient way.
