Modern scientific visualizations commonly utilize digital techniques that are not well depicted through 2D static imagery. Unfortunately, nearly all scientific articles and other communications are constrained by the limitations of printable media. Here we present a framework that modernizes scientific communication through augmented reality (AR) and digital viewing. This framework is available to the scientific community and allows authors to augment digital data directly onto articles, posters and other communications. Ultimately, augmenting publications with data can modernize scientific communication by bridging the gap between the digital basis of present-day data visualization and the natural limitations of printable media.
