The exhibit was created in 2005 to introduce maps of science and technology (S&T) to large and diverse audiences. The maps show the structure and dynamics of S&T at micro to macro levels to support knowledge navigation, access, and management. The exhibit serves as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research and development of theory and tools to make effective science maps affordable and useful for everyone. Annual iterations identify specific challenges and encourage innovative solutions. Each year, a call for maps is issued, submitted entries undergo a rigorous scholarly review process, and the top-10 maps are included in an exhibition for public display at libraries, science museums, and national science academies and the scimaps.org website.
