I am experimenting with ways to visualize uncertainty and this is one example. I used two fox species to symbolise the world before and after reaching 2C degree. As the snow disappears and temperature rises, red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are moving into arctic regions, where the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) lives. Red foxes are larger and more aggressive and outcompete the Arctic fox. Climate change has a big role in the habitat change in the Arctic and the encroachment of species. The division between these two moments is not a clean line. As in every estimation of future scenarios, forecast give a range of possible values that depend on many factors. For the date to which we might reach a certain global warming there is no total consensus, but a right-skewed log-normal distribution is a good approximation. To portray the symbolic replacement between these species, I draw 10000 runs of such distribution that peaks at 2045 (sigma=0.3) to obtain a composite line that shows the many possible moments the 2C warming crisis could be reached.
