My research aims to understand the spatial arrangement of the cells that make up a germline cyst - a conserved structure from fruit flies to mammals that gives rise to eggs or sperm. Using three-dimensional images of labelled cysts, we generated surface reconstructions of their cells that allowed us to map these cells’ relative positions onto a 2D network. Each cyst was uniquely described by this network’s sequence of terminal nodes, thus collapsing the cyst’s three-dimensional structure to a one-dimensional descriptor. Having aligned my images, I recalled Picasso’s Bulls – a series of consecutive abstractions that reduced the full-bodied animal to basic lines and shapes. This final depiction of the bull, akin to the reduction of the cyst to a collection of edges, captured ‘the spirit of the beast’.
