The mandala depicts a series of fluorescent protein expressing transgenic Xenopus tadpoles, froglets, and embryos. I created these organisms using REMI, (Restriction Enzyme Mediated Integration), a technique in which an in vitro synthesized transgene is inserted into genome of a sperm nuclei. The genetically modified sperm nuclei are then directly inserted into unfertilized frog egg, which will subsequently divide and eventually become an adult frog whose cells and germ cells contains the original transgene. In this piece, I imaged the F1 progeny of a variety of transgenic Xenopus lines. I then converted their flouresence signals into CMYK channels and subsequently collaged the images to create the mandala shown.
