Xavier Watkins (EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute, Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridgeshire CB10 1SD, United Kingdom)
We started by aligning protein sequences for the AVPR1a protein from six different organisms using the Clustal tool.. Each amino acid is attributed a musical note, based on a scale defined on the Akebono Hapi Drum (E, F#, G, B, C accross multiple octaves). As the sequences are read concurently, six monophonic synthesisers each play the note corresponding to the amino acid which is read, sometimes resulting in complex chords (when there is a lot of divergence) and sometimes in unison (when the sequences are the same).
