This fantasy-inspired illustration references the remarkable biology of the apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, which is able to fully regenerate its camera-type eyes. The mountain in the center of the drawing is an abstract snail eye, with a spiral of fluffy pink clouds emanating from the peak. Atop the clouds, which resemble the pink egg clusters these snails lay, are tiny embryos progressing through development as they reach the outer edges of the spiral. Two bright stars hang in the sky on either side of the mountain. They are intertwined with the spiral of clouds and reference the structure of the snail’s brain.
