ShengZhen is a tool designed to visually explore relationships within a genome annotation data set. The tool displays the annotations in a matrix, shading each cell according how similar the annotations in the corresponding row and column are. It is possible to interactively choose which annotations are displayed on the axes and how similarity is calculated. Additional filtering options allow the user to focus on specific subsets of the data, while grouping algorithms help discover similarities between data elements. For example: ShengZhen can display annotated genes on each row and column and their shared Gene Ontology (GO) identifiers in the matrix cells, revealing which genes are similar according to their GO annotation. In a reverse visualization the rows and columns contain the GO identifiers and the cells show the number of genes annotated with these GO identifiers, indicating the GO identifiers that are most often assigned to a single gene. ShengZhen is a visually attractive cross-referencing tool that enables flexible exploration of genomic annotation data sets.
