Luke Whitehorn (DEMCON | nymus3D, Institutenweg 25, 7521PH Enschede, the Netherlands)
The Islets of Langerhans are an important part of the human endocrine system, and understanding their formation is important for gaining insights into combating diseases such as diabetes. These structures are formed from an initial cord, from which cells that express neurogenin-3 and emerge and form buds. The cells in these buds differentiate to form the mature islet, which then becomes vascularized, providing the blood with various hormones, including insulin. The research by Nadav Sharon of Harvard University has been visualised by DEMCON | nymus3D. In order to visualise the process, a mathematical model has been developed by nymus which eventually became part of the published research: https://www.cell.com/cell/pdf/S0092-8674(18)31586-1.pdf For AR exhibit
