GigaScience is a ‘Big Data’ Journal whose scope includes biological and biomedical data, with the GigaScience DataBase (GigaDB) providing the publishing infrastructure that ensures the ability to archive and retrieve massive imaging data volumes associated with CT, MRI, and Super-Resolution Imaging studies. In an effort to enable researchers to preview large-volume image data prior to data download, we have generated surface-rendered 3D reconstructions of biological data that can be interactively explored using a web browser. Interactive visualisations of the 3D reconstructions are all made publicly available in Sketchfab (https://sketchfab.com/GigaDB) and in an embeddable viewer in GigaDB (http://gigadb.org/). Using the viewer, researchers and citizen scientists can explore the stunning morphology of Jackson’s three-horned chameleon, the exquisite detail of snake fangs, and the myriad forms of multiple species of hermit crab. In addition, the GigaScience team have made all 3D printable STL files publicly available on Thingiverse, which is a widely used resource dedicated to the sharing of 3D digital designs amongst educators, graphic designers, and digital artists.
