Advances in light-sheet fluorescence microscopy have resulted in 4D (3D+time) time lapse movies capturing the development of whole embryos with single cell resolution. Beyond the beauty of such movies lies a layer of information characterizing the cellular dynamics that give shape to the embryo. In order to grasp and analyze these dynamics, visual tools are needed to depict the cellular movement and feature changes over time. Here, we take the challenge of visualizing single cell behaviour during fly gatrulation and test available tools to explore the landscape of visualization possibilities provided by different software solutions.
