Living Liquid is a research and development project focused on transforming the visualizations used by scientists into interactive museum exhibits. As visualizations become more central to the practice of science, they are increasingly used in museums in graphics or on large displays. Living Liquid focuses on creating visualizations that let the public explore visualizations the way scientists do – as exploratory tools for making observations and finding patterns. The project, led by the Exploratorium and the UC Davis Center for Visualization, has a collaborative development process that brings together the skills needed to transform large datasets. Exhibit designers, computer scientists from UC Davis, graphics editors from the New York Times, educational researchers, and scientists from MIT, Stanford, and other universities create new exhibits, train computer science graduate students in interactive design, and generate peer-reviewed research on how visualizations and interfaces affect learning. At the VizBi meeting we will present examples of how we have transformed scientific visualizations into interactive exhibits, describe our model for cross-disciplinary collaborahttp://www.exploratorium.edu/visit/east-gallery/plankton-population
