The Ensembl project (www.ensembl.org) aims to disseminate aggregated genomic annotation, including graphical views. High-throughput sequencing projects and annotation efforts such as those conducted within the Ensembl project are creating immense volumes of data, and this in turn is driving a total rethink on how variation data can be shown in an interface. The design process is led by users to identify key data, appropriate data volumes and desired components, and data is then prepared within Ensembl to support the final solution. User feedback shows the new designs to be more intuitive and informative, and this approach to refining existing interfaces will be a key methodology as we continue to develop beta.ensembl.org.
