A frozen section of a sample of large intestine from a mouse, stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The central, blue matter is partially digested food, while the outer purple/pink tissue is the mucosal epithelium. We are interested in developing a specific imaging probe for inflammation, in this case colitis. The agent we use to cause colitis in this model (dextran sodium sulfate) has a strong effect on the large intestine, and indications of inflammation can be seen in the villi. This image was created in a collaboration with scientific photographer Kristin Johnson of the Vascular Biology Program and Jason Dearling, Ph.D. of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Image Research, both at Boston Children’s Hospital.
