This poster profiles two related pieces of research. The first is the Leeds Virtual Microscope, which allows users to pan and zoom gigapixel images that are produced by scanning microscope slides. Uniquely, our software renders anything from an individual slide to cases of 100+ slides in real time, on ultra-high resolution desktop and wall-sized displays. We have evaluated the Microscope for both clinical diagnosis and group education in histopathology, and further application areas include pharmaceuticals and other branches of medicine. The second is Paramorama, which is an interactive visualization system that provides a panoramic view of large parameters spaces, and allows users to make rapid assessments of hundreds of different visual outputs, based on qualitative and quantitative measures. Initial evaluations showed how Paramorama helped scientists identify logic errors in algorithms used to automatically segment histopathology images and, compared with a traditional pipeline visualization system, make much more comprehensive assessments when optimising parameter settings to detect cellular features in biomedical images.
