The CELLmicrocosmos 2.2 MembraneEditor (CmME) is a PDB-based Java Webstart software developed to solve heterogeneous Membrane Packing Problems. It was originally designed to conveniently generate rectangular membrane structures which are especially needed for in silico experiments. CmME features an algorithm plug-in interface which can be used to generate custom algorithms. This interface was used to develop the first version of the Vesicle Builder, enabling the creation of ellipsoid heterogeneous single-/double-layered membranes. The generated structures can be exported to PDB and directly visualized with Jmol. In addition these atomic structures can be used in conjunction with cell models from the CELLmicrocosmos 4.2 PathwayIntegration which can be rendered e.g. with software like Autodesk 3ds Max. The image shows a first simple mitochondrion model featuring a length of 0,5 m, including two bilayers based on published lipid distribution values. http://Cm2.CELLmicrocosmos.org
