William Ray (Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus Ohio, USA)
A bacterial biofilm such as forms in Otitis media, contains a latticework of nucleic-acid chains (white) linked by proteins (blue). This cage of nucleic acids may help defend the bacteria which hide within it (green) against host immune responses. Recent research at Nationwide Children's Hospital suggests that agents that degrade the nucleic-acid lattice, significantly increase the susceptibility of the bacteria in the biofilm to antibiotics and host immune responses.
