The cellular changes that occur in the early stages of pregnancy lay the foundations for reproductive success. The image presents a single-cell atlas of the interface (visualized as pink cells) that forms between mother and the developing fetus (Roser Vento-Tormo et al., 2018). These cell-cell communication networks that form to support the growing fetus play a significant role in immunological adaptation so that the mother’s body doesn’t mount an immune response against the implanted fetus.
