Scientific ontologies assist in consistent, interpretable, coherent and unified communication within the scientific community. Ontologies are structured, curated graphs of terms (representations of reality) and relationships that are declared to exist between them. Although experts with domain experience may be able to materialize or visualize the representations and relationships in their own minds, the ontologies themselves do not provide such materialized constructs for the less-experienced consumer. The job of the scientific illustrator is to provide direct visual materializations thereby giving life to these ontological abstractions, bridging the gap between the semantic and the visual construct in the mind’s eye of its audience. Combining tagged 3D materializations with an ontologically aware query engine assists the coherent navigation of a 3D world that is adaptive to the viewer’s self guided navigation of that world. As an example, we illustrate how a system built around the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) can guide a user wishing to explore human skin at increasing level of detail and describe the 3D and ontological concerns required to enable this workflow.
