Living Liquid is an initiative to engage the public with new research about the ocean’s microbes and their functions through visualizations of genomic data. The project is a collaboration between the Exploratorium, the Center for Microbial Oceanography Research and Education (C-MORE), and the Visualization Interface and Design Innovation group (ViDi) at the University of California at Davis. The project brings together professionals of diverse expertise to create visualizations that encourage visitors to ask and answer their own questions about ocean microbes such as their geographic diversity or functions. The goal is to create an interactive multi-user multi-media research station where museum visitors can use visualization tools to explore the connections between ocean microbes and the environment in the Exploratorium's new location over San Francisco Bay. Living Liquid will also provide important lessons for the museum field on ways to create interactive visualization tools for the public, relevant to the growing number of scientific fields that rely on visualizing large data sets. These visualization tools are designed to convey new research about ocean microbes mad
