The GrabGENE program is designed to visualize the output from sequence database searches using the BLAST algorithm. The program gives the user complete freedom in categorizing, sorting and filtering their data based upon any numeric statistic. Also, BLAST hits can be mapped to their corresponding query regions, and hit significance (and other statistics) can be displayed. In addition, heat map display can be used to indicate the relative size of the selected statistic and hence gives the user intuitive understanding of the results. Importantly, the graphical output of the program can be used to select sequences and automatically download the corresponding NCBI record. GrabGENE installs as a standalone Java application and supports the manual import of blastall output files. In addition, the Bioportal website (http://www.bioportal.uio.no) hosted by the University of Oslo (Norway) supports running the BLAST algorithm on a high-performance computing cluster with subsequent generation of GrabGENE input files, also including NCBI taxonomy ids in both the BLAST output file and the GrabGENE input file.
