Streamgraphs were applied to visualize temporal changes of a bacterial community sampled from marine surface water over a time span of 5 months. Microbial proteins have been isolated and identified. The proteins were allocated to about 400 bacterial species and strains. The abundance of defined taxa within the microbial community was calculated by summing up that peptide spectral counts belonging to species related proteins. In general we've learned that streamgraphs are suitable for the display of any quantitative and temporally or spatially connected data sets which have to be linked with hierarchically organized information as known from phylogenetic trees, gene functional categories or gene regulatory data. Furthermore we optimized streamgraph layouts concerning readability of labels, the display of data by using and improving spline based data interpolation and by improving the stacking algorithm that minimizes local slope changes and support optimal label placement.
