Alignment-style charts are used to display genomic regions, gene/protein alignments, and assembly data. This type of visualization poses problems for web-based viewing due to the relative complexity compared to simple bar or pie chart. Previous solutions to these challenges fall into one of two groups - browser solutions and server solutions. Browser solutions only make use of the browser, which results in a lack of power that requires restricting the viewable region to display only a subset of features. Due to the limited number of features, the charts are highly specialized and thus tend to be not viable for general use. Alternatively, server solutions are more powerful, but at the cost of extra overhead, which slows development and limits integration into pre-existing web applications. With HTML5 Canvas, a new class of graphics based web applications has been made possible. Scribl leverages Canvas to create robust charts entirely in the browser, maintaining ease of use while increasing the power. This infusion of power into the browser allows Scribl to be one of the first general-use browser solutions for visualization of alignment-style charts.
