moleculARweb (at https://molecularweb.epfl.ch for free without registration) offers activities devised to assist teaching and self-learning of a wide range of concepts in chemistry and structural biology through interactive augmented reality that runs out of the box in the web browsers of laptops, tablets and smartphones. Users enable the webcam and present to it fiducial markers onto which the app overlays virtual objects such as molecules and other entities like orbitals, cryo-tomography surfaces, etc. By moving the markers, users explore molecular structures, interactions, shapes, etc. New modes without fiducial markers further allow exploration of content with free hands. As of March 2023 moleculARweb includes content on atomic and molecular shapes, hydrogen bonding, and the structure of biological macromolecules and assemblies. Specialized playgrounds allow exploration of molecular mechanics on any system, and generating custom content for web-AR and web-VR from PDB structures or VMD scenes. Over 60,000 visits since its launch showed the activities are easy to deploy even with modest resources, and very engaging hence possibly effective for education.
