Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are transcripts generated by back-splicing that modulate several cellular processes and have been linked to human diseases. Therefore, to uncover the functional impact of circRNAs we developed CircIMPACT, a bioinformatics tool for the integrative analysis of circRNA and gene expression data that facilitates the identification and visualization of the genes dysregulated according to circRNA expression changes, and allows to identify the biological pathways putatively modulated by a certain circRNA. CircIMPACT has been implemented as a collection of functions written in the R programming language supporting circRNA and gene expression quantification data obtained by RNA-seq or by other methods. CircIMPACT produces interactive, responsive, and fully customizable plots and reporting tables. CircIMPACT has been tested by analysis of publicly available bladder cancer RNA-seq data. It successfully detected heparanase expression dependence from circHIPK3 level (Li et al., 2017). In conclusion, CircIMPACT predicts the function of circRNAs by informing specific regulatory axes potentially governed by them, that can be prioritized for further experimental study.
