How does an organism emerge from a single, dividing cell? This image follows this original fertilised cell, alone and uncommitted, as it divides and travels towards its implantation site along the uterus. One cell, two cells, four cells… soon the blastocyst forms. Point of focus of this image, the blastocyst is a hollow shell encapsulating a small mass of precious cells that still maintained the potential to form the embryo. Upon implantation the inner core of cells carried by the blastocyst will indeed give rise to the multitude of cell types that make the organism and the adult bodyplan.
