Getting poster data...
James Rosindell (Imperial College London)
The tree of life is a phylogenetic tree showing the evolutionary links between all species on earth. Whilst our knowledge about the tree of life is growing rapidly, we lack intuitive ways to visualize large trees. This poster and the accompanying interactive display demonstrate OneZoom, a new visualization method for trees. OneZoom is based on a deep zooming user interface and an automatic layout algorithm inspired by fractal geometry. It’s like a map, limitless amounts of information can be placed on one page, and all the user needs to do is zoom to access it. A zooming interface is a very natural way to explore large and complex data sets because it’s reminiscent of the way in which we explore the world around us: moving closer to objects of interest to reveal further details. With OneZoom, trees that have millions of tips and additional metadata on the tips and interior nodes can now be easily visualized and explored in the web browser of any modern computer.
